We perform direct numerical simulations of the motion of particles based on a distributed Lagrange multiplier technique to quantify the effect of density stratification on the settling velocity and microstructure of a suspension of rigid particles. The flow field around particles is fully resolved, and a statistically steady-state condition is obtained after a transient acceleration of particles. Based on the simulation results, we propose a correlation for the mean settling velocity of the suspension as a function of solid volume fraction and background density gradient in a fluid column. The correlation follows a power-law dependence on the solid volume fraction of the suspension. The effect of the stratification on the microstructure of the suspension is also investigated by direct comparison of the pair correlation function between homogeneous and stratified fluids. It is shown that the presence of the background density gradient enhances the formation of horizontally aligned clusters in the fluid column. C 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Hydromagnetic Instability of Stratified Rivlin-Ericksen Fluid in Porous Medium in the Presence of Suspended Particles

The stability of stratified Rivlin-Ericksen fluid in porous medium in the presence of suspended particles and magnetic field has been investigated. Upon application of normal mode technique, the dispersion relation was obtained. The important results obtained in this paper include the instability of non-oscillatory modes and the stability of oscillatory modes. Also, it was found that the system...

Particles for tracing turbulent liquid helium

We address the problem of making quantitative measurements of local flow velocities in turbulent liquid helium, using tracer particles. We survey and evaluate presently available particles and previous work to establish the need to develop new particles for the purpose. We present the first practical solution for visualizing fluid motions using a suspension of solid hydrogen particles with diam...

Computational Fluid Dynamic- Two Fluid Model Study of Gas-Solid Heat Transfer in a Riser with Various Inclination Angles

A two fluid model (TFM) was used to study gas-solid heat transfer in a riser with different inclination angles. A two dimensional pipe with 5.8 cm internal diameter and 5 meter length was chosen.  Effect of bed angle and solid particles feed rate were studied on the heat transfer behavior of gas and solid particles. Obtained results from simulation are compared with the experimental data in the...

Particle concentration evolution and sedimentation-induced instabilities in a stably stratified environment

We present the results of a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of sedimentation in a stratified fluid. The theory of sedimentation in a homogeneous ambient is extended to include the influence of a spatially varying particle settling speed. The results of an experimental investigation of latex particles settling in a stably stratified salt water solution are reported. Density v...
